Abstraction shape exercise

For this project we had to find a picture of an animal, preferably its side profile, and create abstract designs based off of said animal. For this project I chose a hedgehog.

This is my original sketch of the animal I chose (hedgehog)

Attempt #1

For my first attempt at this exercise, I decided to go the geometric route. I decided to map out the parts of the hedgehog by drawing out in pencil first. I then drew these geometric shaped to take the form of the animal. I then colored in the top part to show the changing in color of its fur.

final

I was very happy with my first attempt but there were some things I wanted to change. For my final I wanted to make it even more abstract. I took away the feet, combined all the bottom shapes into one big shape, and I got rid of the shapes that made up the face. I Also made the top fur, that was originally black, a mix of black and white shapes.

Line exercise 2

For this exercise we had to take an ordinary object, mine was a violin, and use different line techniques to describe an adjective.

This was my original sketch of the violin.

Calm and chaotic
For my first design (the top left corner) I chose to depict the word calm. When I think of the word calm, I think of something that smooth, maybe even soft. I used light colored lines for a calmer feeling, I also used wavy lines for the neck and stings of the violin.

For my second design (bottom right) I chose the word chaotic. I wanted to create an image that seemed more unwelcoming and unstructured. I used dark, harsh lines made with charcoal pencil. I even made the indents of the violin more jagged and pointed.

Line exercise 1

For our first line design we had to create different lines that described an adjective.

Line design 1: Angry

For this line design I chose the word angry. I wanted to show this emotion by using dark color with bold lines. I then created harsh, ridged lines. I took a charcoal pencil and pressed it hard against the paper drawing in one direction.

Line design 2: frantic

For my second line design I choose the word frantic. I wanted to depict a line that was unpredictable, a line that would make the viewer feel confused. My inspiration was a lightning bolt, I drew a bold line that zigzagged in deferent directions.
